Making Money From Home (non-phone work)

Okay… my last blog post talked about how I made money from home taking Customer Service calls and orders.  With baby no. 4 on the way I’m trying to put a little extra money away in order to spend time with him/her before having to start working again. (Maternity leave or lack there of is another blog post entirely). That being said, with 2 toddlers at home I don’t have the quiet space in order to take calls but I’ve found other creative ways to stretch my budget and pad the wallet a little.

I’ll only include the opportunities I’ve actually used and made money from.

Amazon Mechanical Turk

I haven’t logged in to use this service in over a year but the little time I did put into it I made $302.17.

What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a marketplace for work that requires human intelligence. The Mechanical Turk service gives businesses access to a diverse, on-demand, scalable workforce and gives Workers a selection of thousands of tasks to complete whenever it’s convenient.

Amazon Mechanical Turk is based on the idea that there are still many things that human beings can do much more effectively than computers, such as identifying objects in a photo or video, performing data de-duplication, transcribing audio recordings, or researching data details. Traditionally, tasks like this have been accomplished by hiring a large temporary workforce (which is time consuming, expensive, and difficult to scale) or have gone undone.

A Human Intelligence Task, or HIT, is a question that needs an answer. A HIT represents a single, self-contained task that a Worker can work on, submit an answer, and collect a reward for completing.

ChaCha

Years ago I discovered a company called ChaCha. When I worked as a guide for ChaCha, any person could text them a question and the question would pop up on my computer screen. I then had a certain amount of time to provide an accurate answer along with the link/website where I got the answer. ChaCha then paid me a fee for my work. Since then I’m sure the pay structure has changed and the technology has improved but over the course of a year I made several hundred dollars answering questions while I watched TV.

Registration to sign up as a ChaCha Guide is currently closed. If you are interested in being notified when positions are open in the future, you can enter your contact information. They’ll reach out to you when a positions opens as a ChaCha Guide. ChaCha Signup

Ebates

I signed up for Ebates a couple of years ago and I almost ALWAYS forget to log in there first to start my online shopping experience… but when I do remember, I’ve found it to be quite lucrative. Ebates pays members cash back every time they shop online as well as provide them with the best coupons and deals online. Founded in 1998, Ebates Inc.’s websites have paid over $325 million in cash to its members. Joining Ebates is always free – you’ll never pay them anything. And four times a year or more, they’ll mail you a Big Fat Check, or transfer the money to your PayPal account if you’d prefer. They can even send the money to your favorite charity. All 100% free. In the handful of times I’ve used Ebates, I’ve recieved $73.21 in payouts. You can sign up for free here: Ebates Signup

Ibotta

Since I started using Ibotta last April I have $79.90 in earnings. Just one shopping trip away from my next $20 payout.

How does it work?

Download the Ibotta app, available on iOS and Android. The app is required to submit a receipt. Unlock  rebates before you go shopping, unlock cash rewards on great products by completing simple tasks. Go shopping and buy products you’ve unlocked at any supported store. Verify your purchases by scanning your product barcodes, then submit a photo of your receipt. You’ll have the cash deposited into your Ibotta account within 48 hours. If you refer friends and build a team, you all end up helping each other out with bonuses. The bigger your team the quicker you earn. You also get $5 when you invite friends using your referral code! Each person who signs up and redeems their first rebate will get $10, and you’ll get $5. After you have accumulated $20 you can cash in. The best part about Ibotta is that you earn real money, not points or other made-up currencies. What you see is what you get!
To get your cash, just link your Ibotta account with either PayPal or Venmo, or create a new PayPal or Venmo account within the App.
You can also take advantage of our other exciting cash withdrawal options, which include Gift Cards from iTunes, Starbucks, and more. I always take the PayPal option.

AppTrailers

Basically you download the AppTrailers app on your phone or tablet and watch trailers, movie previews,  videos and get rewarded points that you can then redeem for gift cards or PayPal credit. It has been buggy at times so if I notice I’m not getting credited then I reboot the app and if that still doesn’t work then I go back to one of my other tried and true opportunities rather than waste my time. I have made over $50 in PayPal credits but it can be frustrating at times…

Etsy

Etsy is a site where you can buy and sell homemade items. You can easily create your own store for free! It costs 20 cents to list an item and then there’s 3.5% sales fee when you
sell an item. It is considerably cheaper than eBay and I also think it’s much
“prettier”.

I found it very easy to get started with Etsy. You just go to etsy.com and in
the top right hand corner you can register. It is very self-explanatory and has a guided process you go through. They also have great help page which answers any questions you might have and gives excellent tips!

Etsy is the perfect way for an artsy-crafty person to make money. However,
it is by no means easy money; you have to work hard getting your name
out there and making quality products that people want to buy. You also need to spend the time promoting and marketing your store in order to get the visibility necessary to drive sales. I honestly haven’t been very good at that. It’s a work in progress. But luckily the customers that find me accidentally love my products and are either repeat buyers or spread the word when they purchase and I’ve been able to recoup my costs and make a little extra spending money.

I created my virtual store after craft shows just became too hard with an infant.
